Two-Tone Shoes

Mar 25, 2017
Les Chaussures Bicolores

The 20th century to today

Two-toned shoes, also known as two-tone shoes, are shoes that have a color scheme consisting of two different colors, usually one light and one dark. The origins of this style of shoe can be traced back to the early 20th century, when it was popular for men to wear shoes with two-toned uppers, often made from leather or suede. The style became particularly popular in the 1920s to 1940s, when it was worn by both men and women. The two-toned shoe trend has continued to be popular throughout the years and has undergone various iterations, with designers incorporating different color combinations and materials into their designs.

The classics

Two-toned shoes are still widely available and can be purchased from a variety of retailers, both online and in-store. You can find two-toned shoes in a range of styles, including formal dress shoes, casual sneakers, and everything in between.
However, the derby and boot style two-toned shoes often have a vintage touch that makes them difficult to wear on an everyday basis (unless you like the old-timey gangster look 😉)

The extravagant

Some designers are trying to reappropriate the two-tone by doing in the original.
They are therefore abandoning the classic black-white/brown-white, to try much more extravagant combinations (yellow-blue, red-green, etc.).
Two-tone shoes are rarely easy to wear, and therefore generally non-existent in our wardrobes. With this in mind, we decided in 2017 to revisit the concept of two-tone shoes.

Our first models

two toned shoes

Our first model was the Rosie derby.
Made entirely of gray and pink suede, this two-tone derby represents what we love the most: a combination of soft and unique colors that dress up an outfit without looking like a "costume".
In this same collection we have created the Chestnut derby and the Mama Chestnut ankle boot. These two models play with two shades of brown: camel and walnut. This type of simple and refined two-tone make modern models extremely easy to wear.
Later we decided to nuance our use of the two-tone even more by playing this time on the bi-material side. The first model in the collection to have been designed with this in mind was our nubuck ankle boots khaki: Mama Kiwi .
By mixing smooth nubuck and grained nubuck we are further moving away from the classic black / white, brown / white models.
And we still have many projects to explore! 😀
